ARMOR by Faire Leather

Armor

I've been asked over the years if I make armor. This is an area that I have chosen to avoid if possible. I've done so for several reasons. Simply by its nature, Armor is a very personal part of a fighters harness, and in order to protect properly, it must fit close to the body yet still allow for a complete range of motion.

It has been my experience that even though the guidelines for what constitutes properly constructed armor is clearly spelled out in writing, the SCA has been terribly inconsistent with regard to what is legal, and what is not! The reason for this, in my mind at least is simple. If your armor was created by a vendor not "favored" by the SCA, your local Marshall could condemn your armor as unsuitable.

There is some very poorly crafted "Armor" being marketed as SCA legal when in reality it would never pass inspection. These vendors tend more toward the fantastic than "Real Period" armor. I will not do that!

I have witnessed some very poor quality armor approved by a Marshall at one event who even commented how nice it was, only to be turned down at another. I'm not willing to put my customers through that kind of unnecessary grief, so...

I am currently experimenting with several pieces of SCA style fighters gear, while still trying to remain as faithful to period style as possible. Once this period of experimentation has concluded, I may decide to offer several pieces of protective armor once I'm convinced that my customers will not be wasting their money because of some local attitude! Remember, fighters gear and armor is meant to protect you from physical harm! Not to look like some Orc from Tolkien's books.

Keep an eye on this page for further developments.

Thanks for your patience,
